Umbilical cord blood donations provide stem cells that can be used in transplants for as many as 80 serious medical problems including the most prevalent types of leukemia.

National legislation H.R. 2520 (109th): Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005 to provide for the collection and maintenance of human cord blood stem cells for the treatment of patients and research, and to amend the Public Health Service Act to authorize the C.W. Bill Young Cell Transplantation Program was signed into law by the President on December 20, 2005.
